What Is AmeriCorps VISTA?
Founded in 1965, AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is the national service program dedicated to ending poverty. VISTA members serve full-time for one year at nonprofits and public agencies across the country. Rather than providing direct service, they build lasting capacity — creating and growing programs, mobilizing resources, and expanding volunteer networks — so the impact continues long after their term of service ends.
What VISTA Members Do
VISTA is about capacity building — strengthening the systems behind the service so an organization can do more, for more people, for longer.
Build Programs
Design, launch, and grow sustainable programs and the processes that keep them running.
Mobilize Resources
Research and secure grants, funding, and in-kind support that expand what the organization can offer.
Grow Volunteers
Recruit, train, and organize volunteers and community partners to multiply the mission’s reach.
Program Basics
Term of Service
Full-time (about 40 hours/week) for one year at a sponsoring organization.
Who Can Serve
Age 18 or older (no upper age limit). U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident.
Living Allowance
A modest bi-weekly allowance set to the local cost of living — starting around $18,700/year for full-time service.
After Service
Choose a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award (about $7,395) to pay for school or student loans — or an end-of-service cash stipend.
Benefits
Health coverage, relocation support, and professional development throughout the year of service.
Career Boost
One year of non-competitive eligibility (NCE), a hiring advantage when applying for many federal jobs.

Combat Boots 2 The Boardroom is proud to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA partner site. Through this partnership, VISTA members serve full-time alongside our team to build the capacity of CB2TB’s veteran, military-spouse, and youth initiatives. Their work strengthens the foundation of everything we do — developing new programming, expanding community and industry partnerships, mobilizing resources, and growing our volunteer base.
